"Daddy I've been thinking"

My seven year old daughter came to me the other day and says, "Daddy, I've been thinking." My brain scattered! Oh boy this is my child and she is starting to think!! What are those cogs in her head churning up now?  She continues, "When I get big, I want to go to college. But I have heard you say that you enjoy things more when you have to work for them. So I don't want you to have to pay for me to go." Insert angels singing in the background along with my blank deer in the headlights expression. On one hand its a great thought. On the other hand she is way too young to be able to follow through with this way of thinking until she goes to college. Or is she? Once I finally regain my tongue to the point I could speak, I ask her "And just how do you expect to do that? You don't have a job yet. And college is kinda expensive." Much to my surprise she had already thought this through. So without a moments hesitation she informs me how she plans to start making money now to put towards her college. When I am with her and the weather cooperates, she enjoys making bird houses. Do to her age, she marks out how big she wants the house to be and makes her own marks on the boards, then I cut them where she wants them. I started out pre drilling a hole so she could screw them together but now she is actually doing it all on her own, without the pre drilled holes. So her plan is to continue making bird houses like we do and instead of hanging them around the yard for the birds we are gong to sell them. At first I thought boy that's a lot of bird houses. Then I realized I only have 12 years to make them. She says "We can make them together then I will paint them, and you can sell them." So now I have a seven year old entrepreneur on my hands. So if anyone is interested I will post some pictures of her making her bird houses and possibly post a few of them for sale. I think it is a great project for a child going for a good cause, well at least it is intended to. At least she will learn about money and how to make it and save it. And of course as any proud father would do: If you would like a bird house or have any comments or special ideas that a young child could do on their own to make a few bucks please feel free to leave a comment. That goes for if you want a bird house as well.

Well thank you for taking a moment out of your day to spend with me. Hope you have a wonderful day, and remember, Life is too short to take everything as serious as we all tend to. Stop slow down, if even for a moment, and enjoy what is around you.
